European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.
For our Undulator Systems group we are looking for a
Mechanical Engineer (f/m/d) for superconducting undulators
- Work in close collaboration with other European XFEL and DESY groups to develop and implement superconducting undulators (SCU) satisfying the user needs in the accelerator
- Design, test and assembly of components needed for the development, optimization of the operation of the SCU test stands
- Design, assembly process including impregnation procedure for new SCU coils
- Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, applied physics or equivalent discipline. A PhD would be considered an asset
- Proven record of successfully completed design projects, preferably in a scientific environment
- Demonstrated understanding of mechanism design, structural analysis, UHV requirements and basic heat transfer and thermal analysis, and ability to apply these to solve engineering problems
- Demonstrated ability to conceptualize designs and have strong analytical and problem-solving skills combined with creative and innovating thinking
- Significant knowledge of 3D modelling (Siemens NX preferred), engineering drawings and FEA tools (Ansys, COMSOL)
- Effective communication skills and ability to work in a multilingual, multidisciplinary team with English as a working language
