EMBL is looking for an enthusiastic Senior IT Systems Engineer – Core Infrastructure Services to join the IT Operations team!

The IT Services team operates and supports the IT infrastructure and services at EMBL headquarters in Heidelberg and the laboratory’s sites in Barcelona, Grenoble, Hamburg and Rome.

As part of the IT Operations team, you will be responsible for managing and developing several of the essential core services within EMBL’s large-scale, high-performance IT infrastructure.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Design and administration of enterprise directory, identity and access management
  • Design and administration of monitoring/alerting systems
  • Management of corporate messaging (Email)
  • (Co-) Management of the high-end data storage, backup and archiving infrastructure
  • Coordination and oversight of development projects with the WebDev Team
  • Technology evaluations; rapid prototyping
  • Tracking and documenting support events and infrastructure development to ensure excellent service quality and end user satisfaction
  • Continuous improvement of our IT infrastructure and support process based on the needs of EMBL users and stakeholders

  • A degree in computer science or equivalent
  • At least 5 years professional experience in managing (integration, automation and monitoring) a medium to large-sized heterogeneous IT environment
  • Experience in using technologies such as NetApp (NFS/SMB), IBM TSM, MySQL, Cisco ESA, LDAP (OpenLDAP/FreeIPA/389 DS), Zabbix, FreeRADIUS, Ansible, VMware
  • Familiarity with protocols like DNS, DHCP, SMTP, IMAP, SQL, AAI (LDAP, RADIUS, SSO)
  • Solid experience in Linux system administration
  • Advanced Perl/Python/Shell scripting skills
  • Basic knowledge of networking and IT security
  • A service-oriented attitude, good communication skills and excellent knowledge of English
