Real-time video processing is always a big topic at our embedded & mobile systems research team. With Zephyr RTOS, it could for example be possible to add video-based features to miniaturized and/or low-power devices using microcontrollers, as opposed to using full Linux systems or highly customized FPGA solutions. If you already have some experience with embedded systems, this is an exciting topic for a bachelor or master thesis and could reach from just displaying a video stream up to integrating DSPs, encoders/decoders, machine learning accelerators, and more. It is also possible to contribute to the upstream Zephyr project if patches or new drivers are required. The goal is to evaluate the approach for its advantages and disadvantages compared to using alternative solutions like FPGAs or Linux. This could be achieved e.g. through performance benchmarking, measuring power consumption, or a comparison matrix, and should result in a recommendation under which circumstances such a solution is viable

  • Experience with a software platform for microcontrollers (like Zephyr, or alternatively Arduino, FreeRTOS, etc.) and/or with Linux on embedded systems

  • Good coding experience is required, specifically with C or C++

  • Git or VCS in general should be a concept you’re already used to

  • You are enrolled in computer science, physics, engineering or similar

  • You are willing to learn and explore with a high degree of initiative and creativity

  • You are interested in new technology and motivated to work on challenging tasks

A minimum of a three-month internship is required before initiating the thesis, to allow for in-depth exploration and development of the topic.
